Summer is right around the corner! And with it brings warmer weather, vacation time, outdoor activities, and parties. However, such fun summer events run the risk of accidents. Preventable summer accidents are an issue across the United States. According to the National Safety Council, fatal accidents spike in July and August. So let’s all make this summer a safe one and avoid accidents & injuries with these safety tips!

Heatstroke in Hot Vehicles

Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children. When temperatures outside climb range from 80 degrees to 100 degrees, the internal temperature of your car can reach a scorching 130 to 172.

  • Never leave your child alone in a car
  • Keep your car doors and trunk locked, and store keys out of reach, so kids don’t get in on their own
  • Teach kids that cars and trunks are not safe places to play
  • Take the free online hot car safety course offered by the National Safety Council: NSC Children In Hot Car

Be Water Smart

  • Swim in designated areas where lifeguards are present
  • Do not leave children unattended near water
  • While at the beach, be aware of currents, the undertow, and weather changes
  • Always have children wear a life jacket approved by the U.S. Coast Guard while on boats or around open bodies of water. Swimming aids such as water wings or noodles are fun toys, but they should never be used in place of a lifejacket

Grilling & BBQ Safety

  • Never leave a grill unattended while in use
  • Make adults aware that the grill is in use and hot; ensure children and pets stay away from the grill
  • Never grill indoors and keep the grill away from the house or anything that could catch fire
  • Use long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to protect from burns and other injuries

Beat the Heat

  • Drink fluids to stay hydrated
  • Sunburns happen fast! Apply sunscreen to yourself and children, reply as needed even if it is overcast
  • Implement a buddy system when working outside in excessive heat and take frequent breaks
