Joseph M. Shimko, a teenage patient, visited the Geisinger-Kistler Clinic in South Wilkes-Barre on June 17, 2013 with complaints of knee pain and hemorrhoids. Shimko was diagnosed with hemorrhoids and prescribed a suppository. In February 2014, Shimko’s mother called the office to ask for a prescription refill. A doctor told staff to try ans coordinate with Shimko and his family to make an appointment with a specialist. That’s when, according to the complaint, the ball was allegedly dropped, and Shimko’s family was never notified, resulting in Shimko ending up in an urgent care facility on Aug. 31, 2014, where he received a totally different diagnosis for his problem – a cyst at the base of his tailbone. Shimko had surgery to remove the cyst, which became infected. He went on to have numerous procedures throughout the next year, and has become permanently disfigured due to all the surgeries, resulting in lifetime pain and disability.
