Accidents and Injuries to Avoid this Spring & Summer

The snow has melted, kids are gearing up for a break from school, there are more opportunities to get outside and enjoy warmer weather, and the roads have cleared, making it easier to travel. But unfortunately, some people will not be able to enjoy this beautiful season because they have unexpectedly been injured in a accident. Stay safe throughout the spring and summer by learning how to avoid these common seasonal accidents…

Clean up Clutter

Clutter causes a huge number of slips, trips, and falls. Avoid springtime slip and fall injuries that involve people being hurt at outdoor get-togethers. Do some spring cleaning and clear the clutter. Look around for tripping hazards like boxes, outdoor decor, gardening equipment, and scattered toys. Electrical cords are also dangerous when they’re strung across porches and patios.

Be Cautious on your Bike

Spring is a great time of year for a bike ride but beware of bike accidents. Ride cautiously and always wear a proper-fitting helmet. For more safety tips, read our blog Safety Tips for Bicyclists & Parents.

Travel Safely Through Work Zones

The orange cones and bright colored signs are already covering roads and highways in NEPA. It is everyone’s responsibility to drive safely and use common sense when driving through work zones. Stay alert. Be Cautious. Practice courteous driving.

Check Playground Equipment

The Consumer Product Safety Commission provides an analysis of injuries and deaths associated with playground equipment. The most recent report showed that from 2009 to 2014, an alarming 66 percent of playground injuries and deaths occurred at home. So before you send the kids out to play, ensure your home playground is safe by checking for potential hazards. You can find a safety checklist provided by the Pennsylvania State University here.

Watch While Walking

Stay safe on your spring walks. Pedestrians are at risk of injuries from vehicles backing out of driveways, turning into parking lots, and making unexpected moves at intersections. Always look both ways before crossing and hold children’s hands until you are in a safe area.
